IAEP to Lobby Denial of COVID-19 Bonuses
Wednesday, May 26 2021
TALLAHASSEE, FL - More than 1000 IAEP members employed by private ambulance services were left out in the cold this month when Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) delivered a one-time relief bonus of $1000 to public sector EMS workers. The omission struck union leaders across the nation as selective and divisive toward the Florida first responders community. In a state where minimum wages make EMS careers already challenging to maintain, every dollar lost to oversight is felt by each tech and medic who fight to protect Florida constituents.
Today, IAEP National Director Phil Petit released the following letter to Governor DeSantis arguing for the inclusion of all private sector EMS professionals:
Back to NAGE News
Representing over 2500 Florida EMS professionals and their families, The International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP) respectfully requests your consideration for expanding coverage of the exclusive public EMS one-time bonus to include private ambulance employees.
Contributions to the fight against COVID-19 have come from across the spectrum of professions, industries and communities. Perhaps the most keenly felt contributions have been by those in medical and emergency services roles. Each of whom, has given up months and now years of their lives and livelihoods in order to protect Florida’s public health.
The deep personal sacrifices made by your local EMS professionals on the front lines of COVID-19 cannot be divided into public or private categories. Diminishing the contributions of any one unit, station or individual would be a great disservice to their commitment as first responders. It is a simple fact that our membership employed by private EMS providers in your state have experienced no fewer hardships than those operating in public service units these last 15 months.
Reserved in these facts, the IAEP respectfully asserts its request to expand the one-time monetary bonus to private ambulance employees of Florida.
National Director, IAEP
